Dear Parent/Guardian:
Each spring, students in grades three through eight and high school participate in the California Assessment of Student Performance and Progress (CAASPP). Your child will be taking the CAASPP between the dates of May 1, 2023 through May 5, 2023. It is important that your child is at school during his or her testing days.
This year, your child will take the following test(s), depending on his or her grade level:
- Smarter Balanced Summative Assessment in English language arts/literacy in grades three through eight and grade eleven
- Smarter Balanced Summative Assessment in mathematics in grades three through eight and grade eleven
- California Science Test (CAST) in grades eight and eleven.
The Smarter Balanced Summative Assessments are online tests that measure what your child knows and is able to do. The tests include many different types of questions that allow students to interact with the test questions. Results help identify gaps in knowledge or skills early on so your child can get the support he or she needs to be successful in school.
If you have any questions about your student’s participation in CAASPP, or would like to request that your student be exempted from one or more CAASPP assessments, please submit a written request to your student’s school specifying which assessments. (Note that you need to submit this request annually. Requests from previous years do not carry over.)
It’s important to keep in mind that performance on these assessments is not the only source of information about your student’s progress in school. You should also review classroom work, grades, teacher evaluations, and other test results in order to get a more complete picture.
As part of the California Code of Regulations that relate to the California Assessment of Student Performance and Progress (CAASPP) program, Public Safety Academy is required to notify families of their student’s participation in the CAASPP tests as well as to inform you of your right to exempt your student from taking the CAASPP tests. This letter is meant to fulfill that requirement. Please feel free to contact Mrs. Stickel with any questions about requesting an exemption.
To learn more about either the Smarter Balanced Summative Assessments or the CAST, go to the California Department of Education Parent Guides to Understanding Web page at https://www.cde.ca.gov/ta/tg/ca/parentguidetounderstand.asp.
You can look at sample test questions on the practice tests, which can be found on the CAASPP Web Portal at http://www.caaspp.org/practice-and-training/index.html.
For information on specific dates and times when your child will take the test in each subject, please contact Public Safety Academy at 909-382-2211, or visit www.psasb.us.
Sincerely,
Jennifer Stickel
Principal
